‘We're at the End of Our Tether’ is a comedy in six scenes set entirely in a restaurant, a place steeped in memories and affection for a couple who have spent their whole lives together. The central theme is food: every course – from the starter to the dessert, right through to the fruit – becomes a metaphor for a stage in their shared life.
The play opens with She and He sitting at their usual table for what appears to be the ‘last supper’ of their relationship. From here, through a series of flashbacks triggered by the recurring musical theme, the narrative flows backwards and then forwards in time: the awkward yet tender first date, the hesitant and comical marriage proposal, living with an overbearing mother-in-law, the desire for a child, financial difficulties, teenage children, new domestic routines – right up to the peaceful, grumbling old age of the two protagonists, now elderly but still close.
Each scene is interwoven with cultured and ironic digressions on the history of food, gastronomy and dining customs through the centuries: from Roman triclini to Cleopatra’s banquets, from Napoleonic Lent to chicken à la Marengo, from the Council of Trent to aphrodisiac chocolate. Food is a mirror of culture, history and human emotions.
The ending, both comic and melancholic, sees the two now elderly protagonists return to their usual table, still discussing tripe and their ailments – yet unable to truly part ways. The ‘fruit’ of the title is both the final course of the meal and a reckoning with the passing of time: and yet, as she declares in the final line, next Thursday is risotto night, and reservations are required.
